Statement of intent
SGLH knows that you care about the way we handle your personal information. This is our policy relating to the personal information that you may be asked to provide via this website, membership forms, emails and telephone calls. It includes personal data specific to you. We wish to express in this Privacy Policy our respect for your privacy and have set out below our specific guidelines to inform you of how we retain your information and for what purpose.
What information do we collect?
The information we collect from you is exclusively for the use of SGLH. This may include your name, address, email address, telephone number(s) and other pieces of personal data specific to you. It will only be used for the purposes outlined at the time of collection. Under the Data Protection Act you have the right to request a copy of all personal information we hold for you. An £10.00 fee will be payable on disclosure of this information. Should any of the data be incorrect or incomplete, a written statement should be sent to the same address where SGLH will endeavour to amend the data promptly.
Information collected from bodies contracted by SGLH to execute specific pieces of work will be only that deemed necessary to complete the contract and as detailed therein. Details of how we handle this information may be requested from: SGLH, 34/2 Moray Place, Edinburgh, EH3 6BX
Use made of personal information:
- Administration of membership
- Fulfilment of orders for services requested (e.g. event payment)
- Administration of donations or legacies
- In-house research and statistical analysis
- Communications about our activities, membership, campaigns and fundraising
- Distribution of our publications
- Distribution of information of potential interest to our members and friends
- Processing personal data for the above purposes may entail sharing the information with Trustees and volunteers. It is not used for marketing.
The only external bodies to which SGLH passes personal data are:
- Its bank (TSB)
- Its online payment handler (Stripe)
- Other bodies contracted by SGLH to execute specific pieces of work (e.g. recording projects).
Personal data will not be held for more than five years after membership lapses or after a volunteer ceases to be involved with SGLH.
Site statistics
We do gather non-personal data regarding site visitors to our website. These data are used to provide statistical information on visits to pages, type of browsers being used to view the site, paths taken through the site and other general information. Under no circumstances can they be linked to a particular person.
Cookies
We record traffic to our website using the Google Analytics service. Google Analytics sets a cookie on your browser when you first visit the site.

Disclosure of information
In addition to these safeguards, your personal data is protected in the UK by the Data Protection Act 1998 and from 25 May 2018 by the General Data Protection Regulation. They provide amongst other things that the data we hold about you should be processed lawfully and fairly. The information should be accurate, relevant and not excessive. It should be kept up to date where necessary, and not retained for longer than is necessary. It should be kept securely to prevent unauthorised access by other people. Removing subscription to mailing lists
If at any time our site contains subscription mailing lists, there will always be the option to remove you from the aforementioned list. Normally this “unsubscribe” option will appear at the bottom of the page.
Security
SGLH is bound by the Data Protection Act 1998 and from 25th May 2018 by the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and will comply with the requirements of both instruments. Any details you give will remain completely confidential.
Changes to privacy policy
We reserve the right to modify and update the terms and conditions of this website. In continually striving to improve our service for our members, we need to be able to enhance the site in ways deemed appropriate
