Virtual Garden Visit – Vrtba Garden, Prague
From a visit by SGLH member Lesley Cumming.
Among all the glories that Prague has to offer this small but magnificent garden can easily be overlooked.
This stunning terraced Baroque Garden on the slope of Petřín Hill in Prague was created about 1720 by František Maxmilián Kaňka for Vrtba Palace. It is entered through an unassuming gateway which belies the reconstructed masterpiece beyond. The “Sala Terrena” in the lower courtyard is decorated with original frescoes and statues. The garden is registered as a Class 1 cultural monument on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
