Bringing the Past to Life in the Newhailes Landscape

At the beginning of September we organized an event as part of the East Lothian Archaeology and Heritage Fortnight. We chose Newhailes as the site for this event where we joined by some 14 very keen participants who wanted to learn how to record and analyse historic gardens and designed landscapes.
A Zoom introductory session was followed by a tour of the site during which participants were invited to identify key features and their characteristics. The day concluded with a further tour of the landscape in the company of Bill Brogden who revealed the many secrets of the Newhailes landscape. We were hoping that this event would attract interest from potential volunteers for our GGEL recording project, which is about to go live, and we were not disappointed.
