Monday 11th November 2024, 6.30-8.00pm.
This year’s joint annual lecture with the Architectural Heritage Society of Scotland (AHSS) is on Drumlanrig: The Making of a Ducal Landscape by Dr David Munro.
Dr David Munro is a geographical consultant for the Duke of Buccleuch at Drumlanrig Castle, on the Queensberry Estate. His talk draws on historic estate plans and fieldwork which assist him in his exploration of a ducal landscape that includes one of Scotland’s largest castles, along with an extensive garden and associated policies. He will also uncover a wider estate landscape rich in many historical features, which bring to light opportunities for heritage conservation and educational activities.
Dr David Munro has been a geographical and heritage consultant at Drumlanrig Castle in Upper Nithsdale, where he has been enhancing the narrative of the Queensberry Estate, one of the many properties of the Duke of Buccleuch. His talk draws on historic estate plans and fieldwork that continue to assist him in his exploration of a ducal landscape that includes one of Scotland’s largest castles, along with an extensive garden and associated policies. In addition, he uncovers a wider estate landscape rich in features that range from Bronze Age art and Roman forts to planned villages, roads, viaducts and bridges. His studies not only bring to light special features unnoticed till now but also opportunities for heritage conservation, educational activities within the local community and the development of tourism with new stories to tell.
