Bringing the past to life in the Newhailes landscape

8-9 September 2021 – The event consists of three linked sessions starting with a webinar on the evening of Wednesday 8 September which is followed by two activities at Newhailes on Thursday 9 September 2021.
A three-part event concerned with the recording and analysing of historic gardens and designed landscapes by volunteer recorders and landscape professionals. You can attend individual events, two out of the three events, or all three. There is no charge. SGLH’s Glorious Gardens volunteer recorders will be working with the East Lothian Council on an extensive recording project in the autumn and we shall be seeking more volunteers for this exciting project.
Session 1
Wednesday 8th September 2021 at 6pm, online and delivered by Zoom
Experienced volunteer, Sue Hewer, will talk about the work of SGLH Glorious Gardens volunteer recorders as they go about their ‘detective’ work. Anna Hardstaff, geologist, chartered surveyor and Session 2 leader will give an introductory talk about fashionable and practical 18th century garden and designed landscape features.
There is no limit on numbers for this session.
Session 2
Thursday 9th September at Newhailes at 10.30am – 12.30pm
This session is designed to give you the opportunity for some sleuthing in small groups accompanied by experienced, active volunteers to identify individual garden features and their characteristics.
Numbers are limited to 20.
Session 3
Thursday 9th September at Newhailes at 2pm-3.30pm.
The details of the gardens and designed landscape of Newhailes are revealing themselves slowly thanks to the work of historical archaeologists and landscape historians. This session will be led by one such (confirmation awaited) who will lead a guided walk around the historical landscape, taking in the features ‘discovered’ in Session 2. A great opportunity for asking questions to fill in gaps from the morning, but equally as a means of finding out what has been revealed so far and what remains to be uncovered.
Numbers are limited to 20.
Please email info@sglh.org to book your place on one or more of these sessions
Cost: There are no charges except possibly a car park charge for non-NTS members
Locations: Online (Session 1) and Newhailes (Sessions 2 and 3)
