Sep 26, 2022

Monday 14th November 2022, at 6:30pm

This year’s joint annual lecture with the Architectural Heritage Society of Scotland (AHSS) will be given by SGLH Trustee and former Chair Judy Riley on Ornaments and Obelisks – Changes at Tyninghame in the early 19th century.

Venue: Augustine United Church, 41 George IV Bridge, Edinburgh, EH1 1EL

Tickets: Tickets are not priced but we do suggest a donation of £6 (free for students).

Talk: With the help of previously unpublished archival material Judy Riley will explore the development of Tyninghame House and gardens, around the first half of the nineteenth century. She will highlight the largely unrecorded changes to the landscape made by the 7th and 8th Earls of Haddington, including the addition of a copy of a 17th century sundial from Newbattle Abbey, before assessing William Burn’s remodelling of both house and garden for the 9th Earl. Her book, Tyninghame – Landscapes and Lives was published by Birlinn in May. This is a joint lecture with Scotland’s Garden and Landscape Heritage.
